Colorado baker target of gay protest for not baking wedding cake
Jack Phillips, the owner of Masterpiece Cake Shop in Lakewood, Colorado, refused to bake a wedding cake for a gay couple. Now, his shop has been targeted by what Jack Hoft of Gateway Pundit called the “gay mafia.”
Phillips “didn’t think he was going to be wading into a civil rights debate when he told the couple that he would not make a cake for their wedding, but that’s exactly what has happened,” CBS reported Monday.
Two gay men – Dave Mullin and Charlie Craig – went to the cake shop thinking they would spend the day trying cakes.
“My first comment was, ‘We’re getting married,’ and he just shut that down immediately,” Craig told CBS.
“We got up to leave, and to be totally honest, I said, ‘F**k you and your homophobic cake shop.’ And I may or may not have flipped him off,” Mullins told the Denver Westword.
CBS reported that the two men posted their experience on Facebook, and the result was “huge.”
On Saturday, dozens of angry protesters gathered outside the shop.
It’s not the first time Phillips has turned down gay couples wanting a cake.
CBS reported that the shop owner has received over 1,000 angry emails over his position, but Phillips said he’ll shut down before he changes his beliefs.
“If gays come in and want to order birthday cakes or any cakes for any occasion, graduations, or whatever, I have no prejudice against that whatsoever,” he said. “It’s just the wedding cake, not the people, not their lifestyle.”
“We would close down that bakery before we closed our beliefs, so that may be what it comes to … we’ll see,” he added.
The Denver Business Journal said that “other customers say they are ordering cakes at Masterpiece Cake Shop” because of its position on gay-marriage.
A larger protest is scheduled for this Saturday.
A commenter at the Facebook event wrote that the shop “should be boycotted and shut down for being homophobic and for treating this couple like they were treated.”
“I am so sick of hatred, homophobia and intolerance,” the poster wrote.
Another person at the Facebook page said the “owner of the cake shop is getting death threats” but we were unable to verify that report at the time of this writing.
“The poor baker forgot this is the Age of Obama. You gotta check your religious beliefs at the door. They don’t mean anything in Obama’s America,” Hoft wrote.

Good for you standing your ground.People mainly children are being brainwashed and led to believe that being gay is a choice. If your gay, whatever you don’t have to throw it in everybodys face.Personally I think the gays bring on most of the problems themselves. And what’s with the gay parade. What a joke you all prance around like pansies ,those are the idiots that nobody wants to see.Mind you in the news you see families taking their children there.are you idiots.society is all messed up and “Christianity” needs to be followed and enforced by Goverment ,family and schoolbords like it use to be.
